One of the things I love most about running a crochet blog is the opportunity to meet and collaborate with other crafty people. Seeing as Two Hearts Crochet runs high on the nerd scale, I also get to meet fellow nerds!
Today, I’m sharing a guest post from Jeris of the wonderfully nerdy blog Fandom Knitting + Crochet. Jeris is multi-talented and a fellow Potterhead, and she’s put together a fantastic guest post that’s all about yarns for fandoms!
Wondering which yarns you should use for projects that are inspired by Harry Potter, Disney, Marvel or Star Wars? Then scroll down and read more!
Guest Post: Fandom Knitting + Crochet
I’m Jeris, and I’m sooooo excited to be guest posting here on this fabulous blog of which I am such a fan!
About me: I’m from Minnesota, and I’m a self-proclaimed “Woman of all Trades.” I am a mom, wife, college instructor, website editor, knitter, crocheter, bookworm, pattern designer, coffee lover, binge-watcher and blogger. I’ve been trying to figure out a way to combine all of my loves, and working from home as a blogger about fandom and fiber arts is really my best shot at doing that.
My fandoms (a brief sampling): Harry Potter, Outlander, Frankenstein, Poldark, Edgar Allan Poe, The Office, Jane Austen, Downton Abbey, Disney, Parks & Rec, Shameless, Stranger Things. Do these all count as “fandoms”? Sure. Why not. Are there more? Oh, yes indeed, but I have to cut this off somewhere, right?
About my blog: Fandom Knitting + Crochet is my blog, but it is more than that. It is a community of knitters, crocheters, those that aspire to the fiber arts, and those that simply appreciate them. It’s also for fangirls and fanboys to enjoy a community celebrating the books, tv, movies, music, and pop culture that inspire us and bring us joy. I post free patterns, “Fandom Spotlights,” and other knitting and crochet-related goodness.
Fandom Yarn – Harry Potter, Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars
Who doesn’t love a fandom-inspired crochet project? If you are reading this, it’s likely because you are a fellow fangirl or fanboy hoping to craft something magnificent to show off your favorite fandom, whether you are a proud Gryffindor, Rebel or Princess. Lucky for us, there are so many fun and fabulous patterns available to do just that.
One of the challenges of fandom crocheting, though, is to find just the right color yarn for your Droid, Thor’s cape, or Rapunzel’s dress. I’ve spent a lot of time playing around with different color combos and yarns to find ones that work really well for beloved character-inspired projects. So, what you’ll find here are some specific yarn suggestions for four of The Big Ones: Harry Potter, Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars.
Of course, this is just a sampling of some of the fabulous fandom characters that can inspire crochet and knit projects, but it is a place to start.
The Hogwarts Houses of Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin provide plenty of versatility in projects, whether you’re making a traditional Hogwarts striped scarf or a complete HP Graphgan. For House Colors, I find nothing better than Heartland from Lion Brand Yarn. It is a lovely, soft, slightly tonal-colored, medium-weight yarn. The best part: it comes is just the right shades for all the Hogwarts Houses.
The specific colors of Heartland that represent all the Hogwarts Houses are:
- For Gryffindor: Yellowstone and Redwood
- For Ravenclaw: Glacier Bay and Mammoth Cave (book colors) or Lake Clark and Mount Rainier
- For Hufflepuff: Yellowstone and Black Canyon
- For Slytherin: Kings Canyon and Mount Rainier
Of all the wonderful Disney characters out there, the princesses stand out as some of the strongest, coolest and all-around most fashionable around. The “modern” princesses, in particular, have some stellar fashion and a lot of spunk. So, whether you want to make an amigurumi princess, a dress for a little princess in your life, or another fabulous princess-tastic project, you’ll need the right yarn in the proper princess shades.
My go-to for princess yarn is Knit Picks, and there is no greater bang for your buck than Brava Worsted. It is affordable, durable, and available is so many fab colors. It is a medium-weight, 100% acrylic yarn. Here are some picks for the modern Disney princesses, Rapunzel, Merida, Anna, and Moana.
These perfectly princess shades of Brava are:
- Rapunzel: Canary, Cotton Candy, and Lady Slipper
- Moana: Black, Coral, Almond, and Cream
- Anna: Fairy Tale, Cornflower, Black, and Celestial
- Merida: Orange and Tidepool
The Marvel Comic Universe is vast and full of colorful characters. A few of the fan-favorites are highlighted in this little yarn round-up, including Thor, Gamora, Hulk, Loki, and Mystique.
The yarn pictured is Heartland again, which has a lovely sheen, perfect for capturing the larger-than-life characters of the MCU!
The exact shades of Heartland pictured include:
- Thor: Redwood, Mount Rainier, Lake Clark, and Black Canyon
- Gamora: Isle Royale and Everglades (and Black Canyon would be great)
- Hulk: Mesa Verde and Hot Springs (and Black Canyon)
- Loki: King’s Canyon and Bryce Canyon (and Black Canyon)
- Mystique: Redwood and Olympic
Star Wars is such an iconic franchise. It spans generations, and the beloved characters make excellent inspiration for yarn projects. The characters are a bit tricky when it comes to yarn choices, however. There is a lot of beige and brown in the Star Wars world, so it can be a challenge. But…challenge accepted!
I Love this Yarn from Hobby Lobby comes with plenty of colors and prints, and is a suuuuper soft, medium-weight acrylic yarn.
The exact colors pictured are:
- Rey: Sand Dunes Print
- Poe: Orange
- Chewy: Brown and Toasted Almond
- BB8: Desert Glaze, Grey Mist, and White
- Yoda: Linen, Brown, and Light Sage
